See in the New Year in steam-heated warmth! The three days of the New year holiday (31st December, 1st and 2nd January) are the only time of the year when the volunteer drivers at Kew Bridge let their hair down and demonstrate ALL the available engines (and a couple of diesels) on the same day. The oldest engine, built by Boulton & Watt in 1820 will be in action. 1820, nearly 200 years ago! That’s before the first passenger carrying railway in the world was built. You can see it in motion, under steam, at Kew Bridge Steam Museum. The mighty 90 inch Grand junction engine will also be in operation. 90 inches? That’s the diameter of the steam cylinder. 2.2 metres if you prefer and big enough for the Blue Peter team to have a tea party inside during the restoration work in 1976. These engines are BIG. There are stairs to climb to reach the beam floors and lots of interesting corners and exhibits to explore. A two feet gauge steam locomotive will pull you round the site and a rather smaller 16 mm steam powered model railway will be there for kids of all ages to enjoy. And being a real waterworks built in 1838, the buildings are Grade 1 listed and set in a traditional waterworks garden. The Museum will be open on each day from 11 am to 5 pm (last entry 4pm). Entrance is £10 for adults, £9 for Concessions and £4 for children (5 to 15 years inclusive) Come at New Year and see for yourself. Then keep coming back for free! There will always be something fresh to see.
