Have you ever wanted to drive a steam locomotive? Did you ever enjoy "playing trains" as a child? Do steam trains still evoke a magical feeling for you?
If you can answer yes to any of these questions, Kew Bridge Steam Museum is interested in you!
We are seeking to recruite new volunteers to drive our steam railway, the only live steam line in Greater London.
The railway operates every Sunday from April to October and on selected Saturdays and bank Holidays throughout this period.
Volunteers need have no previous experience of steam or railways, although a general knowledge of steam engines & steam principles will be a great advantage. Full training will be provided in all areas of steam and diesel locomotive operation, including instruction in health & safety and museum operating procedures.
It usually takes around 18 months to fully train a new driver, based on two training sessions per month, and we would ask all new volunteers to be available for training on at least one weekend per month.
Due to health and safety restrictions we do have to enforce age and other restrictions: We can only accept able bodied people between the ages of 18 and 80 to be a driver. This is due to the physical nature of driving a steam locomotive. (persons aged over 16 will be able to train on the locomotive, but will not be able to drive the engine until they are 18)
If you would like to get involved in this exciting and rewarding job, please email your details to our railway opperations director at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or phone the museum on 020 8568 4757.
