The Kew Bridge Steam Museum will be offering a sparkling new attraction for families on Sunday 12 July when it plays host to Scratch Patch – a giant wooden pit holding thousands of gemstones– and gives children the chance to dive right in.
Scratch Patch offers a fun, multi-sensory way to learn more about the natural world. Armed with comprehensive fact sheets, kids can touch, hold and learn about the many varieties of stone including jasper, quartz, tigers’ eye and lapis lazuli. They can then select and buy take home bags of their favourite stones or make them into pendants using a Scratch Patch jewellery-making kit. For those that prefer there are lots of fossils too!
And to make this experience even more precious for parents, provided they have paid for admission to the Steam Museum, entry into Scratch Patch is free. Prices for a small bag of stones start at £3.50 and £3.00 for jewellery-making kits.
Jo Willis, Public Programmes Officer, Kew Bridge Steam Museum, says: ‘We are really excited by this opportunity to link up with Scratch Patch because it offers an original way of entertaining and educating children and that’s one of our core aims.’
