Infernal Combustion!

Kew Bridge Steam Museum is pleased to announce an exciting new event, “Infernal Combustion!” taking place on Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th September 2010 between 11.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. To mark the return to working order of the Museum’s World War II Sulzer mobile emergency pumping unit, we are holding our first Infernal Combustion! exhibition over the weekend of 11th & 12th September to highlight the role of the internal combustion engine in the water supply industry.

The very rare Sulzer emergency pumping unit has been fully restored in the museum workshops over the last 8 months.  Visitors will be able to see live demonstrations of  the massive power of this pumping unit, which can shoot 1000 gallons (over 4500 litres)  of water up to 300 feet (91 metres) into the air!
We will also be operating our resident collection of internal combustion engines, icluding the large 1933  Allen Diesel pumping plant.  In addition, we will be displaying a variety of visiting engines, all working, together with other related artifacts, and a photographic display drawn from our archive.

Restoration is a key element in keeping these impressive engines running. Over the weekend museum volunteers will be working, in full view of the public, on restoring a 1943 Dennis No.2 fire fighting pump set, which has not been run for the last 30 years,  alowing visitors to see just what goes into restoring and running these historic engines.
For just £9.50 for our annual ticket, adults will be able to enjoy this exciting new show, while accompanied children will be admitted free of charge.
As usual,  our collection of large steam pumping engines will be operating and our very own narrow gauge railway, using both our steam locomotive and our 1957 Lister diesel locomotive, will be giving rides to young and old alike on both days of the weekend.
