Between the Locks, the result of a two year inter-generational oral history projects, is a travelling exhibition which will be hosted at Kew Bridge Steam Museum from Saturday 22nd January to Sunday 27th February 2011. The exhibition tells the stories of those who lived and worked in the upper tidal Thames between the locks at Richmond and Teddington.
The exhibition and accompanying film brings to life the experiences and memories of this local river community that were recorded during the project. Between 2009 and 2010 students from Christ's School in Richmond recorded the memories of people who have lived beside and worked on the stretch of the upper tidal Thames between Richmond and Teddington, a community largely unknown to the surrounding land-based population.Their connection to the weather and tides, and their navigational skills have remained largely unchanged for centuries, and their tough, practical and frugal way of life is relevant to us all as we adapt to the effects of climate change.
Their heritage is as important to the nation's story as that of agriculture or the sea.
These are their stories.
The result of an initiative of the Environment Trust for Richmond upon Thames, the project was managed by Fiona Cosson and generously supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Hampton Fuel Allotments Charity. The project was awarded The John Coleman Trophy 2009 for Outstanding Contribution to the River Thames by the River Thames Society.
