Completion of Conservation of Historic Buildings

Over some 30 years the Museum has successfully applied for grant funding to enable it to repair and refurbish its extensive range of Grade 1 & 2 Listed buildings. With our HLF award we will be able to complete the remaining outstanding works.

The works proposed include; internal refurbishment and re-roofing to the Babcock Cafe building, along with repairs to windows, doors, gutters and new central heating. Refurbishment and major roof repairs to the Economiser House, roofing repairs to the low level tenanted artisans workshop buildings to the East of the site and repairs and refurbishment to the existing Locomotive Shed.

Replacement of the Museum's time expired central heating system is planned, as is upgrading the main incoming electricity supply which is now inadequte for the load carried. Finally a new ventilation system will be installed in the Steam Hall to help manage fluctuations in air temperature accross the year when the engines are in operation.
